Dracon Vulgaris
Basic Details
Common Name: The Common Dragon
Average Height: Two feet, three inches
Average Weight: four hundred twenty pounds
Usual Pelt Colour: Their pelt is a thick, covered in what the uninitiated might suspect to be growths but actually happen to be their children, carried on the adult's back until they burst and leave it. Or until the adult gets hungry. The scales that cover its tail get a bit of a better deal, capable of bending to pressure they're highly prized in making armor that doesn't restrict your movement.
General Appearance: A healthy Dracon Vulgaris will seem bloated, the pounds of marsh gas they keep in their stomachs to keep them afloat in the water give them a pregnant look, what most don't know is that they usually are pregnant, the growths on their back being their prenatal children. They're quadrupeds, with their front legs being a good bit longer than their back and equipped with long black claws they use to slice through their favorite prey, sea cucumbers. Their heads are littered with sharp poisonous spines, they use a hemotoxin that causes generalized tissue damage that generally starts at the point of contact; and right next to those sharp poison spikes there are eyes.Dozens of them. Each eye is about a quarter of an inch to half an inch and they litter its head, more growing as it gets older until at a venerable age it can have up to a hundred eyes.
Ecological Details
Habits: At least a paragraph ex: The Common Dragon is normally a docile creature, it grinds up marsh grass, inhales marsh gas, and chomps down on insects or sea cucumbers. It's not the most maternal of creatures, with their mating system going like this: A female with no children visible is approached by a male, the male attacks and, if he beat her down enough, rapes her until insemination, the male then leaves to look for more females. The female keeps her children inside of her for the first three weeks, but by the fourth week they begin to emerge from her back, suspended in a protein filled fluid. If the mother hasn't eaten most of them by the time the eight week comes around they burst from her back and flee her hungry wrath.
However, this creature has been domesticated by man and it shows. Used as a replacement for the niche that pigs once filled, it's omnivorous tendencies are a welcome change to the murderous rage that so many other creatures have. Although, this isn't to say that they don't fight it's just that most fights are settled with eye counting, whichever one has more eyes wins. Unless one of them feels like being an upstart and fighting for dominance.
Diet: Insects and large ferns
Predators: Felis Major, Flamma Lacerta, both Hymnopetra Viralis and Hymnopetra, Somnifera, and humans.
Niche: Marshy and humid areas.
By Products: Its meat is used in cooking, its tail scales are used in armor making, its spines are used in arrow making, and its claws are used in decoration due to their cosmetic resemblance to those of infantile Flamma Lacerta.
