In the Midlands, the technology base differs massively from simple fire and flint hunters to the mechanized infantry battalions of Horax, all across the land, but there is one constant; the miracle of electricity. Tiny batteries, all over the land, in their millions, harvested from wrecks or the Mountains of Waste, fire old reactors buried under ground, firing nuclear reactions to move turbines that produce electricity. Amidst rumours that Horax have the secret of creating more of these Uriles, the whole world had changed to use them.
'Uriles' means 'Urile Fissile Batteries', tiny batteries roughly 3 centimetres long, shining with chrome and easy to hold in the hand, with round corners and a minute weight.
Inside is a combination of Uranium and Plutonium, with forgotten technology turning any waste Krpyton and Strontium into a gas which joins the mass of background radiation to be found throughout the wastelands. After this, the Urile becomes inert and usually ends up in a melting forge to be used to manufacture weapons. Invented a short time before the Fall, the old society was almost totally bent upon these becoming the future; hence why billions can be found in a single raiding run-it would appear that the old world was never able to utilise them before the world burnt, however.
A single Urile can produce 2gW-h of energy before being expended, and a small supply of 200 can power an entire town for a year. It is small wonder, then, that these have become the currency of the Midlands; these tiny electronic miracles can be found in the pocket of any worker and pay the entire world; the PaciTech company recently reported turning over twenty million Uriles last year, half of which is supposedly given to the government of Horax. This is all, of course, if the PaciTech corporation are to be believed.
It is worth noting, also, that most Tribals turn their nose up at Uriles, and some indeed at the very idea of possesions or currency-they lead simple lives, and if properly equipped are often easy enough to kill-especially profitable when they are living in an old building-because that is where Uriles, and wealth, can be found.
